Healing Hands: Underwater Weaving

A CONVERSATION WITH HARRIET FITZPATRICK

This week, we’re featuring Erin Pollard from Underwater Weaving @underwater_weaving— A weaver whose work moves between the tactile and the meditative, blending art, family, and ritual into every piece.

Healing Hands: Underwater Weaving

In our Healing Hands series, we sit down with makers, artists, and visionaries to explore the rituals, scars, and rhythms that shape their craft.

How do you warm up your hands (or mind) before working on your craft?

If I have an idea I just dive in!

Who or what do you hold close?

Family, nature, sleep, nourishing food, meditation, coffee

What’s one thing you’d let go of if you could?

My cookie habit

What’s one callus or scar that tells a story about your work?

I got a hernia from dancing as a teenager. Perhaps a metaphor for always using my gut

What’s your point?

I’d like to do more talking with my hands and dancing with my feet.

Who would you most like to high-five right now and why?

My son

What’s one tool (physical or mental) you can’t live without?

A basket

What role does rest play in your creative process?

My work and life are incredibly interwoven and often the days typically set aside for traditional rest are the days I’m most inspired to create work. Truly restful sleep feels essential to creative work.

When was the last time you truly surprised yourself?

I’m getting more and more ocd as I get older. Surprises make me faint.

What’s a ritual (big or small) that helps keep you grounded?

Nam Myoho Renge Kyo

How has your relationship to your hands changed over time?

I think they may be more powerful than we even understand.
